Dear Colleague,
All societies are
struggling to reduce assaults, theft and vandalism. Most of us are
also concerned about the damage young people cause themselves, and
the pain they cause others, through drug misuse and early sexual
activity. Despite extensive
efforts in schools and youth organisations and the expensive
advertisements of governments, things are getting worse. Without a radical
change in the way we encourage responsible behaviour, the safer and
more pleasant society we all want will not be achieved.
Values education is a radical and
very practical way. It works by neither telling nor
indoctrinating. Here’s CAVE’s brief
definition.
|
Values education is an
activity during which people are assisted by appropriately
qualified adults, in schools, homes, clubs and religious and
other youth organisations, to make explicit those values
underlying their own attitudes; to assess the effectiveness of
these values for their and others' long term well-being and to
reflect on and acquire other values which are more effective for
short term and long term well-being. |
For me, “values
education” is the ultimate aim of most “educations” such as moral
education, citizenship education, religious education, personal
education, social education, character education, anti-racist
education, sex education, crime education, drugs education, alcohol
education, peace education and environmental education, to name just
a few.
For a more detailed explanation read the report: What is values
education? You’ll find it on the Free Resources page.
A valuable resource and a friendly
community.
Please participate and contribute. Although values education has
been around for at least 15 years, it is still relatively unknown
and misunderstood, so we can learn a lot from one another. All success is helping to make your society an even better place to
live and work.
